I cannot believe we are here, but we have made it through the last full week of school. Remote classes met this week for their last live meeting. I reminded them of the work that we have done this second semester and talked to them about how they can check to see that they have their work completed and returned. All choice boards have been posted in their Google Classroom this week for anyone who needs to review any of our themes. 3rd and 4th grade have had 4 assignments from this semester, 5th grade has had 3 assignments.
We then spent class time playing WhatchamaDRAWit. Our prompts this week were: 1. Draw a creature with a fish head, an elephant body and spider legs. 2. Draw a kitten skiing down a mountain with a mouse riding on her head. 3. Draw an angry banana chasing a happy grape around a bowl of singing cherries. 4. Draw an ice cream cone house. 5. Draw a tiger wearing sunglasses riding a skateboard. Offering these prompts every month has been such a fun way to interact with remote students. This did not take all of class time so I asked that students check their Classwork tab in ensure their assignments have been returned. I also had bittersweet moments with my 5th grade students. My first year at Lincoln Trail was their 3rd grade year so next year will be my first year here without them. They have grown so much and I am so proud of the amazing people they are! They will hold a special place in my heart forever. Next week has 3 days of field day. Remote students have a time slot on Monday to come in and play some games with each other and the Encore team. I can't wait to see them in person!

May 11-May 14This week all grade levels came to the same place again in their schedule for our current project. This week was Week 4 for everyone. We devoted the majority of class this week to finishing our last art project and turning the Google Doc assignment in. Anyone who had their assignment already turned in had the opportunity to play WhatchamaDRAWit. Drawing prompts for April are recorded in a video which is posted in each Google Classroom. Students could also draw, color or stretch their creative muscles in other ways during class if they had their assignment turned in. Assignments are due by the end of the school day on Friday, May 14th.
Next week we will have all of our last live meetings for the school year. That means all assignments need to be turned in as soon as possible. In order to make sure work is turned in and returned, check the Classwork tab in each Art Google Classroom. I leave feedback if something is missing as to why an assignment is not returned. 3rd and 4th grade should have 4 completed assignments this semester, and 5th grade should have 3 assignments (due to all of the Fridays without school). Finish up those projects, turn in those assignments and I will see everyone again next week for our last meeting of the school year! 3rd and 4th Grade: Week 3This week students had the majority of the class time to start or continue to work on their art project. It was great to see so many students working with the Model Magic clay that I offered to them! It isn't too late to request a package. This clay could be used for our form inspired art project, or be considered a small gift from the art room.
The Google Doc assignment is now posted for students to turn in their project and their Monthly review if they finish before the due date (Friday, May 14th). This assignment is posted under the Classwork tab in their Google Classroom. A video with step by step instructions for how to turn it in can be found in the Stream of their Google Classroom. With the end of the school year quickly approaching, it is time to make sure all missing assignments are completed and turned in to earn credit. Students with missing work have been sent reminder emails. Next week during our next live meetings, all students will have one last class time to finish up their project and get it turned in. If they have already turned in a completed assignment, WhatchamaDRAWit prompts will be posted as a fun way to be creative during class. Keep making art and I look forward to seeing you soon! 3rd and 4th Grade: Week 1This week in Virtual Art Class, 3rd and 4th grade were introduced to their next project. We started by looking at our schedule for art making: 3rd Grade Schedule: 4th Grade Schedule:After we looked at the schedule, I introduced our theme for the month, which is form. Form is another Element of Art, and is a 3-dimensional object that has volume. Another art making option students have is to create art using recyclable materials. I read the book Magic Trash, which is a biography about contemporary artist Tyree Guyton. He used trash to make art on his crumbling childhood street in Detroit. Next week in class I will introduce their choice board, which will give them ideas and inspiration on what they could create before they start their project. 5th Grade: Week 2This week I introduced students to the choice board for their last project. They have many options with this project, which includes working with texture or form, creating art with or about animals, and using recyclable materials. If a student would like to use clay for a project, I have Model Magic waiting at school for those interested. Contact me by phone or email to make arrangements. Hopefully the choice board got the creative juices flowing so that next week during class, students are ready for a work day.

Students who had their assignment already turned in had the opportunity to play WhatchamaDRAWit, which is a fast-action, fun-filled drawing game. This month prompts are recorded in a video which is posted in each Google Classroom. Students could also draw, color or stretch their creative muscles in other ways during class if they had their assignment turned in. Projects are due by the end of the school day on Friday, April 16th. Next week I will introduce their last project. 5th Grade: Week 1This week I introduced our art making schedule and our theme for our next project to 5th grade classes. 5th Grade Schedule:The theme for our project looks a lot like a choice board. With all the weeks we have missed, I have more ideas I would like to share with them than time remaining in the school year. We reviewed the element texture (the way something feels, or appears to feel) and Zoo Portraits. We then reviewed the element of form (a 3-Dimensional object that has volume) and briefly introduced the story Magic Trash. Next week I will introduce many more ways that they could make art with our theme before starting a project.

April 6-April 8This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from last week: the choice board for our current project and the tips and techniques document. The choice board is a collection of inspiration and ideas. The tips and techniques of the year have been condensed into one file posted in the Stream, which could be used to make art for any project.

Their assignment is posted under the Classwork tab in their Google Classroom. March 30-April 1This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from last week (our schedule and theme for our next project). Tips and Techniques that I have taught to this point of the school year have now been organized in one document for students to easily access if interested (in addition to being posted in the Virtual Art Room). This file is located in the Stream of their Google Classroom for Art. Students can use any of these taught techniques in any of their art projects, but is not a requirement. Students then learned about their choice board and the different ways they can make art. Both choice boards have the same themes, but different project options were presented to each grade level within my presentation. Choice Board:Students learned more about how texture is made and used with different materials by looking at some examples of art that uses texture. Students can practice drawing different surfaces or use objects that have texture in their project. Third grade students learned about the process of wax resist (water soluble markers or watercolor paint on top of crayon) as a project option that demonstrates texture.
All students then learned about how a few contemporary artists use animals as inspiration in their art. People have represented animals in their art since the beginning of time, and in many different ways. Fourth grade students also learned about a way quarantined pet owners used a cardboard box to turn their pet into a dinosaur. I shared a way that my own kids and I used silly faces we drew and then used as we photographed a cat.
With another Friday with no school, 5th grade did not have art class this week.
Next week, 3rd and 4th grade class time will be considered a work day. I will be checking in to make sure students have at least started their project. They will have an opportunity to continue working, ask questions and get feedback. I will also assign their project assignment during class so that they can turn it in when it is ready. Gather up those supplies, start making your art project, and I will see you again soon. March 23-March 26As art students are now ready to begin a new project, we will continue to follow a 4 week schedule, but our weeks no longer coincide (for the most part) with a month. 3rd and 4th grade students started their next project this week. As 5th grade did not have class the week before spring break, they participated in their M-ART-ch Madness activity this week. For the remainder of the school year, 5th grade will now be following their own schedule. We do not have school the next two Fridays, so their next project will be introduced on Friday, April 16th. This week I introduced our art making schedule and our theme to each 3rd and 4th grade class. 3rd Grade Schedule:4th Grade Schedule:The theme for our project will be the same for both grade levels, with some differences between the two grades coming next week when I introduce their choice boards. At this point, I have more ideas I would like to share with them than time remaining in the school year so our current theme has two different topics. I look forward to seeing everyone again next week! In honor of March Madness, remote students participated in an activity in art class where artists and their artwork faced off head to head. Students learned about each artist and viewed a select group of their work. Students then voted for their favorite between two using the poll feature in Google Meets. The first round started with 8 artists to create a final four. The final four faced off in the championship round until 1 artist was crowned the champion. 3rd and 5th grade students looked at Contemporary Female artists and 4th grade students looked at Contemporary Street artists. Maya Hayuk is a female street artist and was featured in both groups. Each round was harder than the last and it was a lot of fun to see which artist each class crowned their winner.

March 2-March 5This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from last week:
Turning in an art project: To turn in a completed art project, two things must be complete in the Google Doc assignment (located under the Classwork tab in Google Classroom): take a picture of the finished art project, answer 6 questions for the monthly review (talking about how students used their heart, hands, and mind to work like an artist). Reminders for how and where to turn the assignment in are posted in the stream. Link to video here: Turn In Assignment. We devoted the majority of class this week to finishing February art projects and turning the assignment in. Students who had their assignment already turned in had the opportunity to play WhatchamaDRAWit, which is a fast-action, fun-filled drawing game. All you need is an imagination, a pencil and a piece of paper to play. This month prompts are recorded in a video which is posted in each Google Classroom. Find the prompts for this month here. Students could also free draw or color during class if they had their assignment turned in. So that is a wrap for our work for the month of February. February projects are due by the end of the school day on Friday, March 5th. As a reminder, turning in an assignment late is better than never. As always, I have filled with joy with what I have seen students completing at home. Next week I have a special activity planned for 3rd and 4th grade classes. There is no school on Friday, so 5th grade won't have their live art meetings next week (and no assignments beyond turning in their February assignment). |
