February 23-February 26This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from last week: Tips and Techniques for the month and their choice board. The technique this month is color blending, which could be used to make any type of color inspired art. Each grade then has a second option for how they could make art this month if interested (3rd grade: Chris Uphues inspired art, 4th grade: Pop Art/Andy Warhol inspired art, 5th grade: Doodle 4 Google).
We then looked at the February assignment now posted for them to turn in their project and their Monthly review if they finish before the due date (March 5th). Their assignment is posted under the Classwork tab in their Google Classroom. A video with step by step instructions for how to turn it in can be found in the Stream of their Google Classroom and in the Virtual Art Room. Students then had the majority of the class time to work on their project. Students were given the chance to share their work if they would like to. Next week in our next live meeting, students will have one last class time to finish up their February project and get it turned in. If they have already turned in a completed assignment, WhatchamaDRAWit prompts will be posted as a fun way to be creative during class. Finish up those projects and I look forward to seeing you soon!

February 17-February 19We started this week with a remote learning day on Tuesday (2/16), and videos were posted in Google Classroom for students who had art class that day. This week we started class with reviewing our schedule for February and the theme of the month (color). Students learned about the technique of blending colors and how it can be done with different media. This technique is something that they can use in their own work this month, but it is not a requirement. No matter what, learning about techniques is a way to learn and grow as an artist.
We then looked at some examples of artwork that are inspired by a color wheel and that use specific color schemes (primary colors, secondary colors, warm colors, cool colors, neutral colors, analogous colors, complementary colors). I then showed students their second option for making art. 3rd Grade:3rd Grade students learned about contemporary artist Chris Uphues. 4th Grade:4th Grade students learned about artist Andy Warhol and the style of Pop Art. 5th Grade:5th grade students learned about the annual Doodle 4 Google logo design contest and the role of Doodlers at Google.
Next week, class time will be considered a work day. I will be checking in to make sure students have at least started their project. They will have an opportunity to continue working, ask questions and get feedback. I will also assign their monthly assignment during class so that they can turn it in when it is ready. Gather up those supplies, start making your art project, and I will see you again soon. February 9-February 12In our live meetings this week, we had a little information to review before we covered new material: 1. January art projects should be turned in. If they are not yet, it is not too late. Information can still be found in the stream of their Google Classroom, but it will be transferred into the Virtual Art Room next week. 2. The January virtual art gallery is viewable in the Virtual Art Room. This is a private and safe space for virtual students to share their work with their classmates. We then started class by looking at the schedule for the month: 3rd Grade:4th Grade:5th Grade:Then, I introduced the monthly theme. This month all grades are focusing on the element of color. Next week, when I introduce a technique (our Tips and Technique week), and I will introduce their choice board. Each grade level will have two choices in ways that they can be engaged in art class: work with the theme, which is more independently with materials they have at home, or work on a second option. More information about those specifics will come in class next week. If any art supplies are needed, they can be requested and arrangements can be made to get them to students. I then read Sky Color, by Peter H. Reynolds, to each class. This is one of the trilogy about creativity. We read The Dot back in September, and the book Ish rounds out the collection. We then had a great discussion about things they noticed in the book. We ended class by talking about color schemes to get the creative juices flowing on how they could use color in a project.
That is it for our theme for art making this month. Next week will include some more inspiration and ideas before it is time to officially start. Have a great long weekend! February 2-February 5This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from Week 3:
Turning in an art project: What: to turn in a completed art project, two things must be complete in the Google Doc assignment: take a picture of the finished art project, answer 6 questions for the monthly review (talking about how students used their heart, hands, and mind to work like an artist). Where: the Google Doc assignment is posted under the Classwork tab, under the January topic. How: reminders for where the Turn In Assignment video is located. We devoted the majority of class this week to finishing January art projects and turning the assignment in. Students who had their assignment already turned in had the opportunity to play WhatchamaDRAWit, which is a fast-action, fun-filled drawing game. All you need is an imagination, a pencil and a piece of paper to play. This month prompts are recorded in a video which is posted in each Google Classroom. Find the prompts for this month here. So that is a wrap for our work for the month of January. January projects are due by the end of the school day on Friday, February 5th. As a reminder, turning in an assignment late is better than never. As always, I have been impressed with what I have seen so far and I look forward to seeing more as assignments continue to be turned in. Next week we will start a new month of instruction for February. January 26-January 29This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from last week: Tips and Techniques for the month and their choice board. The technique this month is gradient, which could be used to make monochromatic art. Each grade then has a second option for how they could make art this month if interested (3rd grade: landscape, 4th grade: graffiti, 5th grade: black and white drawing).
We then talked about how the January assignment is posted for them to turn in their project and their Monthly review if they finish before the due date (February 5th). Their assignment is posted under the Classwork tab in their Google Classroom for art and a video with step by step instructions for how to turn it in can be found in the Stream of their Google Classroom and in the Virtual Art Room. Students then had the majority of the class time to work on their project. Some students even shared what they were working on and a few even had a finished project already. Seeing all the cool art that students make has been one of my favorite aspects of virtual art class. Next week in our next live meeting, students will have one last class time to finish up their January project and get it turned in. If they have already turned in a completed assignment, WhatchamaDRAWit prompts will be posted as a fun way to be creative during class. Finish up those projects and I look forward to seeing you soon! January 19-January 22This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from last week (our schedule and theme for the month). Students started by learning about the technique of gradient (making value scales). This technique is something that they can use in their own work this month, but it is not a requirement. No matter what, learning about techniques is a way to learn and grow as an artist.
Students then learned more about how value is used in art by looking at some examples of monochromatic art. Monochromatic art is a great way for artists to connect to showing mood and emotion in their work. I then showed students their other option for making a project. The choice board for the month will now be presented during Week 2 of the month and give students two choices, working with the theme of the month or a more guided project. The second option is a project that I teach students in a normal school year. 3rd Grade Choice Board:3rd grade students used the rest of our class time to practice showing depth, value and texture through a guided landscape drawing. 4th Grade Choice Board:4th grade students also learned about 4 different street and/or graffiti artists during a 5 minute museum (around 5 minutes of art history). 5th Grade Choice Board: 5th grade students also learned about 4 different artists who make art in black and white during a 5 minute museum (around 5 minutes of art history).
January 12-15Welcome back Lincoln Trail! I hope everyone had a great winter break. Virtual classes have a new schedule for the second half of the year and I could not be more excited to be able to see each class individually! In our live meetings this week, we had a little information to review before we covered new instruction. I started by reviewing some of my virtual class procedures with all classes. I designate the first two minutes of class as a welcome and display my welcome and reminder image. This is how students know that class hasn't officially started yet, but soon will. Next, we reviewed the class expectations for Virtual Art Class. They can be reviewed here:
The arrangement of our instruction will change a little for the second half of the year. In week one, I will be introducing the theme only. This month all grades are focusing on the element of value. During week two, when I introduce a technique (our Tips and Technique week), and I will also introduce their choice board. Each grade level will have two choices in ways that they can be engaged in art class: work with the theme, which is more independently with materials they have at home, or work on the project that students at school are working on. More information about those specifics will come in next weeks class. If any art supplies are needed, they can be requested and arrangements can be made to get them to students. Each month I also share a children's book as an additional way to connect to art making. I read Color Monster to each class. This book talks about out our emotions (and how sometimes they can be messy), but also has excellent examples of monochromatic art. The illustrations in this book are absolutely beautiful! To listen to a read aloud and see the book, click here. At the end of class, we reviewed our closing procedure. I try to allow at least the last 5 minutes of class for questions and sharing. During this time, I display my reminders/goodbye image. This is how students know that it is an acceptable time to leave our meeting (if they don't have any questions). That is it for Week 1 of January. I look forward to seeing everyone again next week!
December 15-December 18It is hard to believe, but the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year is complete! It was a busy week here in the art room wrapping up all the loose ends that comes with teaching art. Although teaching virtually presented some big challenges, it also provided an opportunity to learn and grow (322 Google Meetings later!). I am so grateful for all the hard work I saw on the other side of the computer this semester! This week students applied the basic information taught last week through our building a tangram lesson (using Google Drawings). Students could either choose to work on a tangram challenge or free draw in Google Drawings during class this week. It was awesome to see students complete and customize their puzzles and see all the cool original pieces they created. Instructions were the same for all grades. Video instructions can be found here:
All first semester Google Classrooms have been archived which means if class was missed this past week and needs to be made up, a student could create an original Google Drawings drawing and share it with me.
Our Encore schedule changes when we return in January. which means all classes will have new Google Classrooms with each of their Encore teachers. Those will be set up the first 3 days of school before our first official rotation begins. Since all in person students will be together all day in the second half of the year, I am trading in my computer (for the most part) for a cart and will travel from classroom to classroom to teach. Remote students will still meet virtually in the afternoons, but each classroom teacher will have their own Encore time slot (yay!). I am sure new challenges will come with this new schedule, but it will be so nice to see more faces in person. Enjoy your winter break! December 8-December 11This week in virtual art class, we started with a final reminder to make sure November art assignments are turned in. Students with missing work have also been contacted through email. The goal is for students to have all 3 art assignments (September, October and November) turned in before winter break. We then dove right in to new material for the remaining classes we do have before break. Students learned a little bit about Google Drawings, what a tangram is, and how tangrams have inspired a contemporary artist in her work. WHAT: Students then had class time to complete a Google Drawings assignment in which they learned how to make the following inventory: HOW: Video instructions for how to draw, resize, rotate and change a shapes color can be found here:
WHERE: Under the Classwork Tab in their Google Classroom, the Google Drawings assignment can be found under the December topic for them to draw in. This assignment is intended to teach them some basics that we will then apply next week during class. Student work on this assignment should reflect their best effort.
December 1-December 4This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from Week 3: 1. What: to turn in a completed assignment, two things must be done in the Google Doc assignment: take a picture of finished art project, answer 6 questions for the monthly review (talking about how they used their heart, hands, and mind to work like an artist). 2. Where: the Google Doc assignment is posted under the Classwork tab, under the November topic. 3. How: reminder for where the Turn In Assignment video is located. Instructions for class this week were the same for all classes. Video instructions can be found here:
We did devote class this week to working on finishing November projects and turning the assignment in. Students who had their assignment already turned in had the opportunity to play WhatchamaDRAWit again, which is a fast-action, fun-filled drawing game. All you need is an imagination, a pencil and a piece of paper to play. This month prompts are recorded in a video which is posted in their Google Classroom. Students had the following drawing prompts to draw:
1. Draw a gummy bear being chased by a gummy worm. 2. Draw a flower that looks as cute as a kitten, but is as mean as a shark. 3. Draw an animal with an elephant body, monkey face and bird feet. 4. Draw a lollipop having a conversation with a chocolate bar. 5. Draw a person with silly eyes, a gigantic nose and a crazy smile. So that is a wrap for our work for the month of November. November projects are due by the end of the school day on Friday, December 4th. As a reminder, turning in an assignment late is better than never. Assignments for the first semester will be accepted through Friday, December 18th. Finish up those projects because I cannot wait to see all the cool art that was made this month. I look forward to seeing you again soon as we have two more virtual art classes before winter break! |
