January 12-15Welcome back Lincoln Trail! I hope everyone had a great winter break. Virtual classes have a new schedule for the second half of the year and I could not be more excited to be able to see each class individually! In our live meetings this week, we had a little information to review before we covered new instruction. I started by reviewing some of my virtual class procedures with all classes. I designate the first two minutes of class as a welcome and display my welcome and reminder image. This is how students know that class hasn't officially started yet, but soon will. Next, we reviewed the class expectations for Virtual Art Class. They can be reviewed here:
The arrangement of our instruction will change a little for the second half of the year. In week one, I will be introducing the theme only. This month all grades are focusing on the element of value. During week two, when I introduce a technique (our Tips and Technique week), and I will also introduce their choice board. Each grade level will have two choices in ways that they can be engaged in art class: work with the theme, which is more independently with materials they have at home, or work on the project that students at school are working on. More information about those specifics will come in next weeks class. If any art supplies are needed, they can be requested and arrangements can be made to get them to students. Each month I also share a children's book as an additional way to connect to art making. I read Color Monster to each class. This book talks about out our emotions (and how sometimes they can be messy), but also has excellent examples of monochromatic art. The illustrations in this book are absolutely beautiful! To listen to a read aloud and see the book, click here. At the end of class, we reviewed our closing procedure. I try to allow at least the last 5 minutes of class for questions and sharing. During this time, I display my reminders/goodbye image. This is how students know that it is an acceptable time to leave our meeting (if they don't have any questions). That is it for Week 1 of January. I look forward to seeing everyone again next week!
