January 19-January 22This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from last week (our schedule and theme for the month). Students started by learning about the technique of gradient (making value scales). This technique is something that they can use in their own work this month, but it is not a requirement. No matter what, learning about techniques is a way to learn and grow as an artist.
Students then learned more about how value is used in art by looking at some examples of monochromatic art. Monochromatic art is a great way for artists to connect to showing mood and emotion in their work. I then showed students their other option for making a project. The choice board for the month will now be presented during Week 2 of the month and give students two choices, working with the theme of the month or a more guided project. The second option is a project that I teach students in a normal school year. 3rd Grade Choice Board:3rd grade students used the rest of our class time to practice showing depth, value and texture through a guided landscape drawing. 4th Grade Choice Board:4th grade students also learned about 4 different street and/or graffiti artists during a 5 minute museum (around 5 minutes of art history). 5th Grade Choice Board: 5th grade students also learned about 4 different artists who make art in black and white during a 5 minute museum (around 5 minutes of art history). Next week, class time will be considered a work day. I will be checking in to make sure students have at least started their project. They will have an opportunity to continue working, ask questions and get feedback. I will also assign their monthly assignment during class so that they can turn it in when it is ready. Gather up those supplies, start making your art project, and I will see you again soon.
