January 12-15Welcome back Lincoln Trail! I hope everyone had a great winter break. Virtual classes have a new schedule for the second half of the year and I could not be more excited to be able to see each class individually! In our live meetings this week, we had a little information to review before we covered new instruction. I started by reviewing some of my virtual class procedures with all classes. I designate the first two minutes of class as a welcome and display my welcome and reminder image. This is how students know that class hasn't officially started yet, but soon will. Next, we reviewed the class expectations for Virtual Art Class. They can be reviewed here:
The arrangement of our instruction will change a little for the second half of the year. In week one, I will be introducing the theme only. This month all grades are focusing on the element of value. During week two, when I introduce a technique (our Tips and Technique week), and I will also introduce their choice board. Each grade level will have two choices in ways that they can be engaged in art class: work with the theme, which is more independently with materials they have at home, or work on the project that students at school are working on. More information about those specifics will come in next weeks class. If any art supplies are needed, they can be requested and arrangements can be made to get them to students. Each month I also share a children's book as an additional way to connect to art making. I read Color Monster to each class. This book talks about out our emotions (and how sometimes they can be messy), but also has excellent examples of monochromatic art. The illustrations in this book are absolutely beautiful! To listen to a read aloud and see the book, click here. At the end of class, we reviewed our closing procedure. I try to allow at least the last 5 minutes of class for questions and sharing. During this time, I display my reminders/goodbye image. This is how students know that it is an acceptable time to leave our meeting (if they don't have any questions). That is it for Week 1 of January. I look forward to seeing everyone again next week!

December 15-December 18It is hard to believe, but the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year is complete! It was a busy week here in the art room wrapping up all the loose ends that comes with teaching art. Although teaching virtually presented some big challenges, it also provided an opportunity to learn and grow (322 Google Meetings later!). I am so grateful for all the hard work I saw on the other side of the computer this semester! This week students applied the basic information taught last week through our building a tangram lesson (using Google Drawings). Students could either choose to work on a tangram challenge or free draw in Google Drawings during class this week. It was awesome to see students complete and customize their puzzles and see all the cool original pieces they created. Instructions were the same for all grades. Video instructions can be found here:
All first semester Google Classrooms have been archived which means if class was missed this past week and needs to be made up, a student could create an original Google Drawings drawing and share it with me.
Our Encore schedule changes when we return in January. which means all classes will have new Google Classrooms with each of their Encore teachers. Those will be set up the first 3 days of school before our first official rotation begins. Since all in person students will be together all day in the second half of the year, I am trading in my computer (for the most part) for a cart and will travel from classroom to classroom to teach. Remote students will still meet virtually in the afternoons, but each classroom teacher will have their own Encore time slot (yay!). I am sure new challenges will come with this new schedule, but it will be so nice to see more faces in person. Enjoy your winter break! December 8-December 11This week in virtual art class, we started with a final reminder to make sure November art assignments are turned in. Students with missing work have also been contacted through email. The goal is for students to have all 3 art assignments (September, October and November) turned in before winter break. We then dove right in to new material for the remaining classes we do have before break. Students learned a little bit about Google Drawings, what a tangram is, and how tangrams have inspired a contemporary artist in her work. WHAT: Students then had class time to complete a Google Drawings assignment in which they learned how to make the following inventory: HOW: Video instructions for how to draw, resize, rotate and change a shapes color can be found here:
WHERE: Under the Classwork Tab in their Google Classroom, the Google Drawings assignment can be found under the December topic for them to draw in. This assignment is intended to teach them some basics that we will then apply next week during class. Student work on this assignment should reflect their best effort.
December 1-December 4This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from Week 3: 1. What: to turn in a completed assignment, two things must be done in the Google Doc assignment: take a picture of finished art project, answer 6 questions for the monthly review (talking about how they used their heart, hands, and mind to work like an artist). 2. Where: the Google Doc assignment is posted under the Classwork tab, under the November topic. 3. How: reminder for where the Turn In Assignment video is located. Instructions for class this week were the same for all classes. Video instructions can be found here:
We did devote class this week to working on finishing November projects and turning the assignment in. Students who had their assignment already turned in had the opportunity to play WhatchamaDRAWit again, which is a fast-action, fun-filled drawing game. All you need is an imagination, a pencil and a piece of paper to play. This month prompts are recorded in a video which is posted in their Google Classroom. Students had the following drawing prompts to draw:
1. Draw a gummy bear being chased by a gummy worm. 2. Draw a flower that looks as cute as a kitten, but is as mean as a shark. 3. Draw an animal with an elephant body, monkey face and bird feet. 4. Draw a lollipop having a conversation with a chocolate bar. 5. Draw a person with silly eyes, a gigantic nose and a crazy smile. So that is a wrap for our work for the month of November. November projects are due by the end of the school day on Friday, December 4th. As a reminder, turning in an assignment late is better than never. Assignments for the first semester will be accepted through Friday, December 18th. Finish up those projects because I cannot wait to see all the cool art that was made this month. I look forward to seeing you again soon as we have two more virtual art classes before winter break! November 17-November 20This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from last week: tessellations and mosaics as art that uses shape, scumbling (coloring in a circular motion), and how different media, tools, and even household items can be used to make a shape inspired collagraph. We then talked about how the November assignment is posted for them to turn in their project and their Monthly review if they finish before the due date (December 4th). Their assignment is posted under the Classwork tab in their Google Classroom for art and a video with step by step instructions for how to turn it in can be found in the Stream of their Google Classroom. Students then had the majority of the class time to work on their project. While students worked, I sent reminder emails to those that have a missing art assignment. Our goal is to have all art assignments turned in before winter break. Some students even shared what they were working on and some even had a finished project. Seeing all the cool art that students are making has been so rewarding for me and I look forward to seeing more next week. Instructions from this week are the same for all grade levels. If you missed your live meeting, watch this video:
Next week we do not have school for Thanksgiving break. In our next live meetings the week after break, students will have one last class time to finish up their November project and get it turned in. Finish up those projects and I look forward to seeing you soon!
November 10-November 13This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from last week (schedule for the month and November art making options). Students learned more about how shape is used in art by looking at tessellations and mosaics as ways of making art. Students then learned about the technique of scumbling. This technique is something that they can use in their own work for the month, but it is not a requirement. No matter what, learning about art styles and techniques is a way to learn and grow as an artist. I then showed them how they could use some basic supplies to create a collagraph. I used a cereal box, corrugated cardboard, a paperclip, buttons and some scrapbooking supplies to make a printing plate. I then made a crayon rubbing of the plate on copy paper and used washable markers to create a watercolor effect. I used a robot as my subject matter, but other shape inspired images could be used. This is another way they could make art this month, but not required. This week, students should be starting to work on their project. Instructions for all students are similar, but are recorded by grade level: 3rd Grade:
4th Grade:
5th Grade:
Next week, I will be checking in to make sure students have at least started their project. They will have an opportunity to continue working, ask questions and get feedback. I will also assign their monthly assignment early in the week so that they can turn it in when it is ready. Gather up those supplies, get to making your art project, and I will see you again soon
November 4-6This week in art class, students were given their final reminder for turning in their October assignment (turning in their October art project and completing their Monthly Review). October instruction is moving into the Virtual Art Classroom if any of that information is still needed. We then dove right into new instructions for ways to be engaged in art class for the month of November. Our November schedule: This week was Week 1, so students learned about their theme for the month. 3rd grade has a broad theme to choose from as they make art in November. 4th Grade has two choices (the theme or the monthly drawing prompts). 5th grade has three choices (the theme, the monthly drawing prompts, or making a still life). In the art room, students are given more choice and ownership in their art making decisions as they get older, which is also reflected in Virtual Art Class. Third Grade:4th Grade:5th Grade:Next week, I will be checking in to make sure students have planned for their project (brainstorming ideas from November instructions) and they will learn a tip/technique that they could use in their project. They will also have time to start their project. Gather up those ideas and supplies and I will see you then!
October 27 - October 30This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from last week: 1. Where the Turn In Assignment video is located. 2. Both the October art project and Monthly Review are in the same Google Doc, which is posted under the Classwork Tab in their Art Google Classroom. Instructions for class this week were the same for all classes. Video instructions can be found here:
Students then played WhatchamaDRAWit, which is a fast-action, fun-filled drawing game. All you need is an imagination, a pencil and a piece of paper to play. Students had the following drawing prompts to draw:
1. Draw a monster with a pizza head, hot dog body and French fry arms and legs. 2. Draw a laughing squid talking on a cell phone while sitting in a bathtub. 3. Draw a ghost eating a pretzel and drinking a carton of strawberry milk. 4. Draw a playground for animals. So that is a wrap for our work for the month of October. All projects are due by the end of the school day on Friday, October 30th. Finish up those projects because I cannot wait to see all the cool art that was made this month. I look forward to seeing you again soon as we start our next project for November! October 20 - October 26This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from last week: hatching/crosshatching, the blotted line printing technique, and how different media, tools, and even household items can be used to make line inspired art.
Students then had the majority of the class time to work on their project. Some students shared work they were working on and some even shared their finished project. Seeing all the cool art that students are making has been so rewarding for me and I look forward to seeing more next week. Instructions from this week are the same for all grade levels. If you missed your live meeting, watch this video:
Next week in our live meeting, students will have one last class time to finish up their project and get it turned in. Students with their work turned in will have the opportunity to play WhatchamaDRAWit, which is a fun drawing prompt game. Finish up those projects and I look forward to seeing you soon!
October 13-October 16This week in Virtual Art Class we started by reviewing important information from last week (schedule for the month and October art making options). Students then learned about the techniques hatching and cross hatching. Students learned more about Op Art (art that includes lines) and the blotted line technique (a drawing/printing technique invented by Andy Warhol). These techniques are something that they can use in their own work for the month, but it is not a requirement. No matter what, learning about art styles and techniques is a way to learn and grow as an artist. I then challenged them to see what household items they may already have that could be used for their project. I used cardboard and rubber bands and a styrofoam take home container to make stamps that use line. I used a plastic bag with washable markers to print some fall leaves using the blotted line technique. I also used security envelopes as a decorative paper (envelopes that bills come in) to make a tree. Art materials even come to us in the mail!
This week, students should be starting to work on their project. Instructions from this week are the same for all grade levels. If you missed your live meeting, find your grade level video to get caught up: 3rd Grade:

Next week, I will be checking in to make sure students have at least started their project. They will have an opportunity to continue working, ask questions and get feedback. I will also assign their monthly assignment early in the week so that they can turn it in when it is ready. 4th Grade! Since we do not have school on Friday, October 23rd, the next time we have class your project will be due. Gather up those supplies, get to making your art project, and I will see you again soon!
